Peter Jackson's Bad Taste (1987) ------------------------- Things that make you go 'eww' With all the hoohah about Lord of the Rings, director Peter Jackson's older stuff is getting some play. Lucky for us Bad Taste is reissued on DVD. This cult classic is what established Jackson as a director. He made the film on a shoestring budget (250K grant from New Zealand government) and shot it on a camcorder (16mm) in his spare time over a 4-year period with his buddies acting and mum and dad as production assistants. It was shown at the Cannes film festival and won several awards. This film is a hilarious spoof of the gore/ spatter genre. A swat team of New Zealand government geeks take on a ton of vomit-guzzling space aliens that have come to earth looking for meat. Luckily, the aliens are generally slow- moving, so that more of them can be killed in gratuitous ways (just don't lead them as much). These are a few of my favorite things: when the dog bites, when the bee stings, geeks with chainsaws, gore, machine guns, violence, meaningless gore, sick humor, exploding livestock, intestines, gore, vomit, bad acting, brains in mid-air, and a bazooka -Peter Jackson himself plays the dual role of Derek the geek and Rob Zombie (vomiting model) Cool things about the DVD ------------------------- -The making of. Tells how young Peter the geek siezed his parents camcorder as a kid and started goofing off with it making some cheesy army-guy blowing-stuff-up flicks with his mates and some stop-motion stuff. Shows how Peter, the unfocused young genius, had so many ideas going on that he rarely finished anything before moving on to new stuff. The rubber space alien costumes were baked in Peter's own oven. Viewing parameters ------------------ view with mates while getting toasted. Be sure to eat first, not during
